Woman in the Dunes

Installation performance (2016)

Untitled

Woman in the Dunes is inspired by the Japanese novel of the same name, written by Kobo Abe. It tells the story of a woman living in a deep dune hollow, only to be entered by a hanging ladder. She keeps a man captured, who’s fate it is to survive in a sand pit day after day.

Tomoko’s Woman in the Dunes is a micro-cosmos in a dune hollow on Terschelling. The audience is trapped in the sand pit with a pianist, and makes an escape from everyday life for a moment. Tomoko fills the dune hollow with piano music, shrouded in a transparent silver installation created by the young Chinese designer Ting Gong.
